Director of Curriculum and Student Performance Presents at The British School of Beijing, Sanlitun

21 January 2013

Mark Orrow-Whiting, Director of Curriculum and Student Performance for Nord Anglia Education visited The British School of Beijing, Sanlitun to speak to parents about how they can help their child make progress through opportunity, support and motivation.

Mark led an engaging interactive session with parents and some members of teaching staff, breaking down preconceived ideas about intelligence, ability and the curriculum as well as giving practical advice to parents on how they can help and encourage their children at home.

Presenting to a capacity crowd of parents and friends, Mark discussed how keeping children enthusiastic and interested in learning is vital. If they are bored because the concepts are too simple, or if they are frustrated because they are too difficult, it’s easy for them to give up. Mark discussed the importance of offering children challenges that invigorate them to help their minds grow and offered practical tips for parents.

Parents who attended the workshop said that they found Mark’s insight on ‘expectations’ and the ‘motivational techniques’ he suggested most useful. Jo Zancanaro who has a nursery aged child at the school said: "Mark's presentation highlighted for me the importance of providing a home environment that encourages and supports learning. Positive reinforcement and enthusiasm from home will ensure my daughter will want to learn and question. My own perseverance and positive attitude towards learning will only help her to succeed".
