On Friday 8 March, The British International School Shanghai, Pudong held an ‘Art in Action’ charity dinner and live auction at the Holiday Inn, Kangqiao to raise money for Shining Star. The event was one of the schools programme of 10 events held over the year to celebrate their 10th anniversary.
Students from each class (64 in total) were asked to work collaboratively on a piece of art in a medium of their choice. The theme for the piece was ‘10’ to signify the school’s anniversary year since its foundation in Shanghai.
Approximately 160 attendees bid on over 100 pieces of art with the money raised going to Shining Star, a charity which provides a foster home for blind orphans. The home teaches the children the life-skills they need to progress through life with little or no vision, as well as obtaining medical examinations to assess whether treatment to restore any vision is possible.
Together with photos and videos from students about the meaning and impact of art on their lives, guests were treated to a video presentation about the charity, including a very personal message from one of the blind orphans called Tao Tao. Two photos that he took himself were auctioned at the event for a staggering 13,000RMB.
Thanks to the generosity of those who attended the event, Art in Action raised a phenomenal total of 85,100RMB for Shining Star. This sum will be enough to pay for the operations needed to restore a child’s sight.
