Verona

During Thursday to Sunday Mr Cox and Mr Evans took the U16 team to Verona to compete in the Mediterranean Cup competition for International schools.
Teams from all around took part in the competition and in the Bratislava group the team played schools from Italy, Switzerland, Dubai, Egypt and Japan.
In spite of the high quality of the teams taking part and the relatively young age of our players the team did really well and was highly competitive in all of the 9 matches they played during the tournament.
The team managed to make the final of their section but unfortunately lost on penalties 3 – 2 after a 1 – 1 draw in normal time.

The organisers sent the following message regarding the team:

We would like to compliment your school for the attitude and enthusiasm of your coaches and for the fantastic spirit of sportsmanship and fair play demonstrated by your players.

The referees and hotel management also asked me to say how impressed they were by the overall standard of behavior from the team.

Well done to:

Joao Pereira for scoring 8 goals; Ben Cox 2 goals and 5 assists; Richard Balheim two penalty saves; Kofi Thorpe who was our player of the tournament; David Garcia, Jacob Wilcox, Oleksii Grygoryshyn and Victor Verbraeken for their tireless defending; Luis Powter, Jee Soo Byoun, Li Long and Josh Bradshaw for their excellent work in midfield.

Good to see that not only can BISB compete at the highest level of school sports, but also that we can do so with the right spirit and attitude.

Bernie Cox
