Year 3 - Light and Shadows

The week, Year 3 have started learning about light and shadows.  We started by thinking about the biggest light source Earth has – The sun!

“You may not know but the sun is an ordinary star, but all the other stars are too far away for us to feel their heat so we think the sun is really special but in fact it’s just ordinary!” Talya

“Did you know that the sun is 1.4 million km wide?” Seohyeon

“Has anyone told you that the sun does now move in the sky, it might look like it does but amazingly it is Earth that rotates!” Sara

We then went out into the playground to explore the length of shadows and how they move during the day.  We found out that our shadows were longer in the morning and in the afternoon, but shorter at lunchtime when the sun was higher in the sky.

We also explored the type of shadows that different objects made.  “A ruler and a sharpener makes a pale shadow because they are translucent.  Opaque objects make a dark shadow…” by Jasmine
“Things like a bottle and plastic bowl are translucent so they make pale shadows.  Glass windows don’t make a shadow at all because they are transparent.” Kristina K.

We are going to go on to explore the moon’s orbit of the earth, and the earth’s rotation around the sun.  Check out moodle http://learning.bratislava.nordanglia.com/ and educationcity http://www.educationcity.com/ or lots of learning links for you to explore at home.
