Living in the Age of Plastic

Did you know that 17 billion plastic carrier bags are given away by supermarkets every year? That’s 290 bags per person! One million plastic bags are used worldwide every minute and 9.1 billion plastic bottles are used in the UK every year!

Plastic is used in many ways: bin liners and carrier bags; new plastic bottles; video and compact disc cassette cases; fleece jackets. There are so many things we use that are made out of plastic, we can’t even list them all. We now use about 20 times more plastic than we did 50 years ago. It is important that we RECYCLE PLASTICS as much as possible. However, when it comes to most plastic products including plastic bags, they can not be recycled. The best thing we can do is REDUCE their usage or NOT USE THEM AT ALL. If you are thinking what you could do to reduce the use of plastic bags and plastic wraps, here is our advice:
• Use textile shopping bag
• Buy food which is not wrapped in plastics
• Use plastic bags which are biodegradable.

The Eco committee has organised activities to raise awareness about plastics and their impact on the environment. We have prepared some fun and educational activities with the motto: PLASTICS HAVE FEELINGS TOO meaning that plastics want to be useful and recycled rather than piling up at landfills.

Join us in our mission. Even small action matters.
