Y9 Trip to ORF studios Vienna

On what has become an annual event the Y9s learned what goes on behind the scenes to make a TV programme. We were guided backstage into the news studio, where we discovered why newsreaders hold papers in their hands even though their script is on an auto-cue: it’s to help keep their hands steady, so that they don’t appear nervous!

Next, in Austria’s biggest studio, we were amazed at the array of lights needed to illuminate the stage and found out that people in front of the camera might have as many as eight layers of make-up to hide skin blemishes and, more importantly, to prevent sweat appearing due to the heat from the lights.

The highlight was, as ever, the Blue Room, where our guide demonstrated the various camera tricks and special effects that can be used to create something which is far from possible. With Silvia and Victor controlling the cameras, they managed to show Matthew and Ebrahim flying like Superman over the desert. Luis lost his head but we found it on top of Ben’s body. Alice and Beomseok flew on a magic carpet over the rooftops of Vienna, and Jiahao managed to shake hands with the twin brother he doesn’t have.

So, whilst we were told that ‘the camera never lies’, it is in fact a long way from the truth.

We were very proud of our Y9 students who conducted themselves in an exemplary fashion. They asked good questions and gave intelligent answers during the tour, and we hope they learned something about what is involved in the TV business. And who knows? - Maybe some of them might be inspired to one day take up the microphone and entertain us on a screen in our own homes.
