    Heidi Rowlands

    Head of Chemistry

    Heidi Rowlands

I completed my B.Sc in Environmental Geology and my M.Sc in Engineering Geology at the University of Leeds, where my research projects focussed on Geochemistry. I then spent 3 years working for a multinational environmental engineering consultancy before deciding to change vocation and become a teacher. I completed my PGCE at the University of Bristol in 2004, and worked at a large comprehensive school in Wiltshire for 3 years, before deciding to go into International Teaching. For the last decade I have had the great privilege to teach in Thailand, Nepal, and Brunei, as both a Chemistry teacher and a Head of Department, and I am now very excited to be joining the Science Department at BISB as Head of Chemistry.

    Shahzad Khan

    Physics Teacher

    Shahzad Khan

I worked as a qualified Civil and Structural engineer for over 10 years on railway infrastructure and multi-million pound commercial and residential projects all over the UK.

I gained my PGCE with Birmingham City University and started my career as a Mathematics teacher in the UK teaching in a state school and later at a private boys’ school.

I began my international career in Egypt 2014, in an International School in Cairo. I spent two further years teaching Maths and Physics at the International British School of Alexandria.

I decided to apply to BISB in 2017 because a colleague, and former employee of BISB, gave a stunning endorsement of the school, its staff and especially its students.

    Kathryn Barnard

Biology and ToK Teacher, Deputy Head of Secondary,

    Kathryn Barnard

I am very excited to be moving to Slovakia to be joining the friendly staff and students at BISB. After completing my degree at Loughborough University, then my PGCE and Masters in Education at the University of Cambridge, followed by two years of teaching in London, I moved to China to start my international teaching career. Having spent five years at Dulwich College Shanghai and then two years at the British School Jakarta in Indonesia, I have thoroughly enjoyed experiencing new Asian cultures, cuisines and adventures.

I am an enthusiastic and innovative Biology and TOK teacher, who believes that all children have the right to a stimulating education that best prepares them for our ever-changing and developing world. I motivate my students with exciting and challenging activities that equip them with the knowledge and skills to enable them to develop into critical thinkers who act with integrity and strive to become life-long learners. Over the last nine years, one of my main focuses within education has been on student wellbeing and personal skill development. Having been a Keystage 3 Head of Year in China, and most recently working as part of the IB team at my previous school, I have gained a wealth of experience within this area of education.

    Paul Harrison

Chemistry Teacher and Head of Secondary

    Paul Harrison

Paul has been in education all of his working life and joins BISB after spending six years as Secondary Headteacher at the Bishop Mackenzie International School in Malawi. Prior to this he has held other leadership positions around the world, making a deliberate decision to work in IB World Schools from early on in his career. Paul is an enthusiastic Chemist, with almost 20 years’ experience as an IB Diploma examiner. He still gets a buzz from seeing the spark light up behind a student’s eyes when they “get it”, and encourages them to set their personal goals by “beginning with the end in mind”. He says that one of the factors influencing his decision to come to BISB was the warm friendly welcome he received from everyone when he visited the school early in 2016, a sign of the trust and co-operation that exists within the school community.
