Baby Cindy Update

More than six weeks since our Community Group, with funds raised by them and the broader school community, donated 45,500RMB for the transplant surgery, Baby Cindy is still waiting for the operation.

Originally, surgeons were confident Cindy’s mother would be able to be the donor, however subsequent tests revealed she and Cindy’s father both have medical conditions that prevent them donating.

“It’s been like a soap opera. Nothing has been straightforward,” says Naomi Kerwin, founder of the charity One Less Orphan, who intervened when the family was initially attempting to abandon Cindy due to her condition, and who is assisting the family with making the surgery a reality.

“The good news is the surgeon says Cindy’s condition is stable and he has told me she is number one on the list for donors,” Naomi continues. Of course, that means more uncertainty as the donor must also be a deceased child no older than eight years old who had a healthy liver. The surgery could happen any day, or it might take a while to find the suitable donor.

In the meantime, Naomi reports that Cindy is her sweet and smiling self, but must remain under medical supervision living at the hospital until surgery takes place. All of the funds raised remain in Cindy’s hospital account to be used for the surgery.
