Physical Theatre Masterclass in Drama

Physical Theatre practitioner Mark Hill visited Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 yesterday. His welcome return to the school gave more students an opportunity to explore a Physical Theatre master class within the school environment. Students experimented with gesture, space, music and lighting whilst creating outstanding performances.

Mark Hill is an Australian Physical Theatre practitioner who has worked for many years in Japan as a Butoh performer. He now travels the world sharing his expertise with universities and schools. His work is renowned for getting students to take risks in performance, challenge their imaginations and creating original and powerful pieces.

On Monday 15th September, Years 8 and 9 explored the powerful aspects of gesture and how arranging a series of gestures in a sequence can impact a scene. Music and a basic spotlight help create an atmosphere of intense focus. Shadow formations on the walls set the actors apart and heightened each movement.

Year 10 were given a workshop on some of the basic principles of Butoh Theatre. They work intensively on their physicality, using their bodies as their main tool. Quick, impulsive and instinctive paired work led to each student gaining an awareness of their ability to think and work outside the box.

The enthusiasm and energy in each workshop was a clear indication of the enjoyment and focus share by all.
