English

Next week in English, we will be exploring themes and drawing comparisons. Using our text, The Whisperer, we will be making links with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We will even attempt to write a prologue of our own.

Next, we will be looking at the present perfect tense, and demonstrating how we can move between two versions of the past tense in our letter writing.

Finally, we will be looking at the role of dialogue. We will have a lesson exploring drama skills, and use this to develop the role of dialogue in both our acting and our writing.

Maths

In Maths, the children will be focusing on number; in particular, fractions, percentages and decimals. At the beginning of the week our focus is on ordering and comparing fractions. We will then focus on mixed numbers and improper fractions and converting between the two. The children will then be using a fraction wall to find equivalent fractions.

As the week progresses, we will also solve problems involving fractions. Towards the end of the week, the children will be focusing on percentages, calculating percentage; particularly, 25%, 50% and 75%. They will also compare percentages with fractions and decimals and solve word problems involving percentages.

Topic

Next week, the children will be completing their work on their topic The Great, The Bold and The Brave by preparing speeches to deliver to parents on Tuesday as they walk around the Year 5 Museum. The children are very excited about their exit point and we hope that you can come and see it!

As scientists, the children will have their entry point for our new unit Being Human during Tuesday afternoon. We have some parent volunteers and other professionals talking to the children about how to look after their bodies and be healthy. After this, the children will complete a knowledge harvest to show what they already know about this topic and what they still want to find out.  At the end of the week, the children will recap on the differences between animals and humans as well as review their knowledge of the brain and neurons.
