Flying High with Year 4

On Friday 22nd January, the Year 4 classes celebrated their learning on their IPC topic of ‘Gateways to the World’. Year 4 classes had been studying about airports and were keen to show their learning through recreating the process of flying for their parents.

Parents arrived at NAIS International Airport and were first brought to a travel agent where they could choose their destination of choice whilst speaking to travel agents. The Year 4’s had created the travel brochures for various different countries that they were inspired by. After this, parents then went to the check-in desk where they checked any baggage in Lots of parents got into the spirit of the day and brought their luggage along. They were also issued with a boarding pass and passport which students had also designed. Following this they moved on to Passport Control where they had their passports stamped and identity confirmed. After clearing Passport Control they then had to move to security check where their bags were put through an x-ray machine and had their bodies scanned.

At this point they then boarded the plane named “Cheetah Air” which the students also designed. After being greeted by flight attendants, parents were brought to their seats where they then watched a video of the safety presentation which the students had scripted and performed. Take off went smoothly, and then parents were served a light refreshment and snack whilst working on the entertainment packs that students had also designed which included a number of different games and activities to keep them busy. Finally, the flight ended and after a safe landing, parents were escorted to Customs where they had to complete a quiz designed by students on all that had happened.

Both students and parents had a lovely time sharing what had been learned in our IPC topic this term. This was definitely a highlight of the unit as many parents were quoted as saying that it was one of the best flights they had ever been on. This learning will carry on with Year 4 students as they will have a deeper understanding of the process of travelling through airports. Many will embark on holidays for Chinese New Year and parents are all very keen on letting their children lead the way with their newly gained knowledge.
