Friday 5th February - School closes for the Chinese New Year holiday and will re-open on Monday 15th February

English

Next week the focus of English will be on revisiting Narrative Text.  Students will be watching a short video clip as a stimulus for writing.  Students will then look at how they can further develop characters in a story by looking at creating two distinguishable characters.  This will be done by ensuring the descriptions include lots of detail and some interaction between characters.  Further to this students will be focusing on the setting of stories and making sure that the setting is relevant to the plot of the story.

In addition to this students will be discussing sentence structure and vocabulary use to make sure that it is at an appropriate level.  This will be done by identifying language features and trying to include them in their own writing.

Maths

The focus of Maths this week will be on Data Collection.  This will be linked with our topic How Humans Work.  Students will be looking at questions that need to be answered through collecting data, graphing and then comparing the information they have collected.  Some examples of questions include: Do adults have smaller heads than children? Children in our class have longer arms than children in Year 6.  Students will actively have to decide what sort of information needs to be collected, how they would like to present it and to draw conclusions from their findings.

Topic

Due to missing two days of school this week, we will continue our focus on the eyes and ears next week.  Students will be working as Scientists to develop scientific investigations to answer questions about how the eyes function.  They will then be learning about how the ear works and looking at the differences between high and low pitch and high and low volumes.  After learning about how the eyes and ears work, students will be developing their own vision and hearing tests based on what they have learned.

After this we will be learning about the teeth.  Students will have the opportunity to look at different teeth (both human and animal) and learn about the function of each.  They will also be looking at how diet may affect teeth and how to keep teeth healthy.
