It has been yet another busy week in the IB academy. The Year 12s have been completing their planning for their upcoming service trip to Rongshui and the Year 13s have been formulating targets based on their final round of Extended Essay feedback.

SmartBacc

We are delighted to provide all our IB students with an individual subscription to SmartBacc - an online revision resource. The Year 12s received their subscription and personal login details this week and can now start accessing the material.  Please use this link to access the launch page.

Usernames and passwords have been individually emailed to each student.

Questia School

Our Year 12 students will soon be making a start with their extended essays. To support the research process, every IB student at NAIS Pudong receives access to the Questia School database. In addition to a large range of cover to cover cross disciplinary digitised books, journals, encyclopaedias and newspaper articles, the system furthermore includes student research tools. These tools include highlighting, note taking, bookmarks and project folders.  These tools can also be used on any online book, article, or website with the Questia browser extension!

Project Week

Year 12 students are looking forward to Project Week in Rongshui and an opportunity to embrace many challenges. The week will have a strong service focus with the team engaged in refurbishment work at an orphanage by day and working and playing with the children in the evenings. As well as making a very real difference to the lives of these children, our students also have a wonderful opportunity to develop skills and understanding through their involvement. Staff will work with them to structure their reflections: how do our actions fit into a global context? What are the ethics behind volunteering with people who have had fewer opportunities than ourselves?

The week also offers a diverse range of opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and physical activity. Students will have to use both brain and brawn in a raft building challenge, will develop skills in a kayak and will have the chance to trek through rice terraces and swim in the plunge pool of an exceptionally beautiful waterfall. We will be privileged to be included in an evening showcasing Miao culture. Students will be pushed to explore their responses through creative channels including art, photography and creative writing.

We look forward to seeing you early on Monday morning at the start of the adventure.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)

At NAIS Pudong our collaboration with prestigious institutions such as Julliard and MIT greatly enriches our students’ learning experience. The first STEAM day was a resounding success.  The IB student contributed to the event by participating in the Big Draw project. Please see our school Facebook page for videos and photos of our students in action!

Core Focus Week

Next week all secondary students will be participating in a residential project week in various parts of China. Year 13 students will receive a modified programme focusing on core components of the IB curriculum with a particular focus on the extended essay submission.  The week will also include TOK presentation preparation as well as a visit from the National Space Academy. Our Year 13 students will be provided with the opportunity to participate in a critical thinking workshop. This will be fantastic preparation for the upcoming TOK assessment tasks.

Year 13 TOK Update

The Year 13s have reached an important milestone. They have completed the formal content of the subject guide and now begin the assessment phase of the course.

The final theory of knowledge presentations will take place on the 1st and 2nd of December 2016. Please note that this is a formal assessment task and the outcome contributes 33% of the final theory of knowledge grade. We aim to provide our students with the best possible opportunity for success. Therefore the presentation process will begin during the core focus week. The process will include ample opportunities for formal and informal feedback.

The IB Diploma is a two-year programme and the Standards and Practices mandate minimum teaching and learning hours. As such, the theory of knowledge presentation is a mandatory curriculum requirement for all IB Diploma Students. Attendance and participation in the presentation process is mandatory and fully assessed. This includes contributions to discussions throughout the presentation process. Students who miss the theory of knowledge presentations, for whatever reason, including but not limited to early flights and holiday arrangements, will not be given the opportunity to present their work after Christmas. Regulations preclude any exceptions. In the unlikely event of a student not attending the presentations, the grade that was awarded for the mock presentation will be used for the final assessment.

Higher Education

With some Year 13 students already finished their university applications, we await the offers eagerly.  If your son or daughter has not completed their personal statement yet, please support them at home in getting it finalised and we will then check it through with them.  They have been provided with material and guidelines on how to write their statements and Mrs Watson is available for appointments should they need help.

SAT preparation classes have started for those students who plan to apply to American universities with an initial past paper benchmark test and analysis of these results.  Should anyone wish to join the class, there are still places available for the Wednesday night session from 5-7pm.

There have been visits from SCAD, University of Bath, Hult Business School, Leeds College of Music and Emirates School of Hotel Management this week.  Lots of students have taken the opportunity to gain further insight into these universities and help firm up their choices for applications.  Year 12 parents, please ask your sons/daughters whether they have attended a university visit yet at school.  If the answer is no, what are they doing to research their options for university?  Those students, who have researched well, make stronger applications and get better offers.
