ACAMIS Green Group Tournament 20th – 22nd October

The NAIS Tigers D1 Girl Volleyball team have a fantastic season showing determination and resilience always striving to do their best. The team went into ACAMIS last weekend at SCIS Hongqiao with a positive attitude with a great sense of team spirit. The competition across the six girls teams was incredible with the majority of the games going to three sets. The team entered the competition with a win against BCIS with fantastic spikes by Jule and defensive play by Grace. The second match of the day saw us play against the home side, however, after being one set up we narrowly lost it in the third set. Entering the second day of the tournament the games were wide open, losing the first two games to KAS and RCHK the NAIS Tigers knew they needed to win the final game to ensure at least a chance of being in the top four. A win in the final game and a loss by another team meant we went through in fourth meaning that a place in the final was still possible.

The team carrying a few injuries played against KAS the winners of the group. Winning the second set and leading in the third the team unfortunately could not maintain this lead and again lost by two points. The team were still able to come home with a trophy but needed to beat the home side. Showing courage and resilience the team were led by our level headed captain who along with the team entered this game with a desire to show revenge and beat SCIS. The team played exceptionally well with some fantastic serves by Fernanda and some amazing diving by Marina, the team finally beat SCIS to come third in the ACAMIS D 1 Volleyball. All stars players of the tournament were Jennifer Thornton and Fernanda Marchent.

ACAMIS Green Group Tournament 20th – 22nd October

The Boys ACAMIS Volleyball Tournament was held at Shanghai International Community School in Hongqiao. It was a very difficult tournament for the boys as a couple of players suffered injuries and had to be withdrawn from the competition.  The tournament consisted of six teams, two from Shanghai including ourselves, one team from Taiwan, Beijing and two teams from Hong Kong. The first game was against BCIS Beijing and the team lost narrowly two sets to one. I thought the boys deserved this game although crucial spiking opportunities were not taken during the latter stages of the third set.

In the second game against RCHK Hong Kong, last year’s runners up in this competition. The team performed better although the setting and hitting from Hong Kong was exceptional and they eventually won the match two sets to zero, 25-18pts and 25-17pts respectively. This did not dampen the team’s spirit and they went into the third game on day two with their heads held high knowing that they had given a good account of themselves in both matches.

The third match of our tournament started on day two and it was against the hosts and champions from last year’s ACAMIS, SCIS Hongqiao. The boys started of strongly and Yoav Shimoni was setting sweetly for some big hammer spikes from Jack Bailey. The first set was narrowly lost 25-21pts and during the second set the teams opposite position player Joseph Chong got injured. Joseph has had an excellent season for the team and his injury was a major blow especially as he has played a key role in winning many points. The game finished two sets to nil and the second set was won by 25-18pts.

The boys lost their next match against KAS Taiwan, 25-22pts and 25-18pts. The final game of the day was against Discovery College Hong Kong and they narrowly lost again 25-22pts and 25-16pts.

The team continued to rally together and the demonstrated true Tiger spirit, never giving up and staying positive during all the games. The final day of the tournament had arrived and although the team had not won any games they had won the hearts of many teams with their positive spirit and vocal support a true testament to their characters.

The final game of day three was against our first opponents of the tournament BCIS Beijing. Thomas Wallace got injured and unfortunately was unable to play during the final day.  Ironically we lost again two sets to one which was the score from the team’s first encounter against this squad. The score was very similar 25-20pts in our favour and 25-17pts to BCIS. The final set was lost 15-8pts.

I was very proud of the true tiger spirit demonstrated throughout every game during the tournament, and how this group of boys represented the school.  The teams MVP was Dieter Jesus Arias in Year 13.This young man was exceptional in nearly every game and his defensive and receiving skills were amongst the best of any team competing in the tournament. These comments were endorsed by many other coaches from participating teams.

The team consisted of:  Joseph Chong, 11A, Jesus Arias, 13C,  Joaquin Rios Saldarriaga, 12A, Oleg Grunda, 13 A, Thomas Wallace,10B, Yoav Shimoni, 13A, Giorgio Wu, 13C and Jack Bailey 13C.
