Due to project week there will be no swimming in Year 2 next week, Children need their normal PE kit instead.

STEAM Day has been a fantastic success in Year 1. It has been brilliant working with children from across the year group and seeing how they have solved the challenging problems we have set for them! If you would like to create your own STEAM challenges at home, please follow this link for some fun and engaging ideas:

English

Next week in English, we will be helping Colin the Human Cannonball to patch his ripped cape. Being blown out of a cannon is a real problem if you want to keep your clothes clean and intact apparently! The children will learn how to thread a needle and stitch two pieces of fabric together. They will then write their own instructions to help other children thread and stitch independently.
Maths

The focus in Maths next week will continue to be calculation. We will be learning to count in multiples of 10 and 2 and we will use real objects to show how the amounts increase as you say the number i.e. if you are counting up in 10s, add 10 things each time to show children what counting in 10 actually means. If you would like to help your child at home, please follow this link:

We will also be learning about subtraction of two numbers. We will do this with practical objects and the children will record their calculations as number sentences. We will introduce new language, such as 'total' and 'sum' and explain to children when it is appropriate to use both. Please use this great (football!) game at home to support your child's learning:

Topic

Next week the children will be exploring materials in our science lessons. As part of our IPC learning, the children will learn how to carry out a simple investigation and they will be challenged to ask and answer simple scientific questions.

The children will be introduced to 6 different materials. We will explore the properties of each i.e. what makes wood wood and paper paper. We will also discuss and test which of the materials would be best to patch and sew for Colin the Human Cannonball's cape!

Next week we are excited to be informing the children that they will be a lecture given by the UK Space Agency on Thursday (6-7pm) on Travelling to Space, this is a great opportunity and hope to see many of you there.
