Stars of the Week

Star of the Week in 5A is Alessandro Moccia, for excellent collaborative work with others.

Star of the Week in 5B is Jouri Al-Malki, for her rapid improvement, confidence and effort in learning English.

English

As we begin our new topic, we begin an exciting new unit of work based on Lynne Reid Bank’s ‘Tiger. Tiger’. We will continue to develop our versions of the story, using our homework and our story plans to support us. We will then begin to explore the next few chapters, using our summarising skills to condense the important information, and presenting this in an accessible manner for our classmate. We will also be focusing on the language of the text, exploring author choices and discussing how these make for a more effective read.

Maths

Next week in Mathematics, we will return to addition and subtraction. This will involve consolidating our understanding of the formal written method for both, and we will stretch ourselves by focusing on explaining how and why we ‘borrow’ and ‘carry’ numbers. We will begin to think about how we might add and subtract larger numbers mentally, and in Ms. Preston’s group this may include numbers with over four digits. We will explore the use of ‘jottings’ to help us with this. We will also develop our problem solving skills by tacking some collaborative problem solving activities, and will spend dome time revising the tricky topics we have learnt so far this term.

Topic

Having completed our Exit Point for Living Things this week, along with launching our new topic of ‘The Great, The Bold and The Brave through our creative challenge Entry Point, we now move into the historical content. Having shared our ideas in the knowledge harvest, we now focus on how Ancient Greece was partitioned into city states, finding out what these are and how they operated. We will draw comparisons with our systems of government today, and will focus especially on the two rival city states of Athens and Sparta. Do you know how and why these two city states were so different? We will be looking at geographical and military factors that affected the lifestyles and choices of individuals running and living in these places.

Next week we will be informing the children that they will be taking part in workshops on Friday run by the UK Space Academy in school and there will be a lecture on Thursday (6-7pm) on Travelling to Space, this is a great opportunity and very exciting!
