  • Year 1 are counting down to Christmas

Information and Reminders

Thank you very much for making sure your children are coming to school with the appropriate uniform for the colder days. It has been lovely to see the Year 1 students looking after their gloves, scarves and coats and making sure they keep them safe in their lockers if they don’t need them.

The Infant Christmas Show is fast approaching and we are all very excited to share our exciting production ‘Lights, Camel, Action!’ with you all on 12th and 13th December. Below are the costumes required for each class, if you have any questions regarding these, please contact your child’s class teacher:

1A - The children are all playing the parts of funky camels. For this they will need to wear light brown trousers and a brown shirt/ t-shirt. Mrs Schopp will provide head pieces.

1B - Children in Class 1B, we need beige or brown long sleeved tops and a tea towel for their heads.

1C - We will need children to bring a long-sleeved black T-shirt and black trousers. If you have any silver tinsel you would like to donate, please send it to school with your child.

We will need all costumes in school by the 5th December at the latest.

On the 14th December, we will be hosting a Primary School Reading Workshop. It will be a fantastic opportunity to learn about how to share books with your children, ask appropriate and challenging questions and, most importantly, make reading a fun and accessible part of your daily family lives. There will be separate workshops for different age groups and there will be opportunities to ask any questions you may have to our teaching staff. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Wednesday 14th December.

English

Last week, we received a mysterious Christmas present but we weren’t sure who it might be from. Unfortunately, when we finally opened the present on Thursday it was empty! It seems that the mean old Mr Grinch had taken away our presents because he hates Christmas. In English, we will be talking about the difference between our wants and our needs. Do we need presents at Christmas or do we just want them? Do we want a warm, safe house at Christmas time or do we need one? Hopefully if we keep sharing what is most important in our lives, the Grinch will return our presents in time for Christmas Day! Please watch this video at home with your child: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgP0aUKlmNw

Maths

In mathematics we have been learning about finding missing numbers in number sentences, for example 5 + ? = 8. We will explore this concept using practical resources and then record these as number sentences in our maths books. The children will also begin to learn how to count in multiples of 2, using numicon to support this visually and we will revisit how to tell the time and set a clock during our mental oral starters. Please try this game at home with your children to practice identifying missing numbers: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/matching/AdditionX.htm

Topic

As part of our learning about our wants and needs at Christmas time we will continue to learn about how different cultures celebrate Christmas. What is important to other people around the world? Do they want the same things as us or do they need something different? Perhaps they need things which are even more important than presents and Christmas food? In preparation for our Christmas show, the children will continue to rehearse as a Key Stage. Please ensure that all costumes are in school by the 5th December.
