Information and Reminders
We have been made aware that some of the homework we have set has been a bit much, or too tricky, for some students. We appreciate all feedback on this. We set English, Maths and Topic homework every week, and the expectation is that each should take approximately 30 minutes. If your child is unable to complete a task, or it is taking longer than 30 minutes, please let your child’s class teacher know and we can adapt it accordingly.
Class parties will be held on December 15th. Your child’s class rep will be in touch soon to arrange food contributions. We have sent a letter out regarding Secret Santa which we will be holding at the party. If you would like your child to participate, by bringing in a gift of approximately 50 RMB, please make Ms. Preston or Mr. Johnson aware by Monday 5th December.

Stars of the Week
Star of the Week in 5A is Salma Gichana, for always looking out for other people, and for resilience and perseverance in Maths.
Star of the Week in 5B is Hwaryong (Jenny) Hong, for being a responsible role model to other children.
Next week in English, we will be focusing on some non-fiction work. We will use the information we found out this week about the Romans and the Roman sites across Europe to create a glossy and informative travel or tourist brochure. We will be thinking about persuasive writing techniques, and considering how authors use structure to improve the accessibility of their writing. Focusing on reader engagement, we will not only read a range of brochures, but will also be writing our own. In spelling, we will be returning to work on homophones. These are words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings. In particular, we will look at how the –ce or –se ending of a word is linked to its word class (whether it is a noun or a verb). Next week in Mathematics, we will be pattern sniffing. This strand of the curriculum is linked to sequences and linear sequences as a progression from ‘counting in steps of’. Our main focus for the week will be to secure all students on the Year 5 objective to count forwards or backwards in steps of powers of 10 for any given number up to 1 000 000. We will be breaking this into smaller steps, such as in counting in tens, hundreds or thousands from any number. For those students confident with this, including where they cross into a new column (99,817; 99,917; 100,017), we will look at identifying numerical sequences in pictorial patterns. As an extension to this, we will look at what an ‘nth term’ is, and begin to identify rules for finding any term in a sequence.
Having explored Roman sites and the Roman Republic, next week we will begin to look at the Roman political system and social hierarchy. We will continue our focus on using sources to find out information about the past, and will look at where the Romans had a lasting impact across Europe. We will even be looking at the impact of Roman developments upon the way we live today, as well as identifying what ruins and other primary sources can tell us about ancient civilisations.
