Year 11 News - 19 February

Firstly, welcome back to all our Year 11 students and a Happy Chinese New Year to you and your families! Here at NAIS Pudong, we celebrated the Year of the Monkey with a number of events, including the very successful Temple Fair on 31st January and the Secondary school Assembly on 2nd February. The assembly featured traditional music and singing; information about Chinese New year customs; a video documentary about how people celebrate Chinese New year and a traditional Lion Dance.  A special well done to the Year 11s who were involved in this, including Pascal, who played the cymbals and distributed traditional ‘White Rabbit’ sweets, and Fili and Eric, who formed the back and front respectively of a very playful lion!

Also before the holiday, the NAIS Pudong Tiger Shark FOBISIA swim squad travelled to the British International School in Phuket on January 28th to take part in their first international swim meet. With 17 schools from Thailand, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Shanghai the swimmers competed exceptionally well, finishing 8th overall. I would like to congratulate Charlie (pictured), MK and Bryan for their successful participation in this highly challenging event. Special mention goes to MK, who gained a place in a final where he was competing against Thai, Filipino and Indonesian champions who have Olympic B qualifying times.

Now that the celebrations are over, it is time for students in Year 11 to begin focusing in earnest on their revision. You have already received the revision timetable, which details the extra help available to any student who needs it; in addition to this, individual students are being targeted with personalised help to ensure that they achieve their targets, and you will hear more about this in due course.

Art

Students from the IGCSE Art group recently visited two Shanghai galleries as part of their studies.

Mandarin

Members of the Year 11 IGCSE first language class have submitted pieces of original writing for the coming "Golden Apple" International school, Shanghai Chinese writing competition. The topic is "Study Chinese, know  more about China - My story of learning Chinese". The students did very well in the writing and Ms Zhao would like to wish them good luck in the competition. Science

In Physics, students have been exploring the ideas of magnetism and electromagnetism that have changed the meaning of energy by producing electricity. In Chemistry we are looking at polymerisation.

History

Mr Dawson's class are currently studying for their China exam, focussing on the rise of Chairman Mao - specifically the Long March and the invasion of Japan.

English

Year 11 students have now finished their IGCSE course in both Language and Literature and are currently engaged in revision of our set play, All My Sons by Arthur Miller. They have been rereading and discussing the play, making detailed notes and will be watching a filmed version of Howard Davies’ excellent 2010 production, starring David Suchet and Zoe Wanamaker.

German

Miss Ford's German class are studying the topic of environmental protection in German. They are learning complicated vocabulary such as 'Wasserverschmutzung' and 'die Erheizung der Erdatmosphäre' and are able to use such  lengthy terms in conversation about the environment in class.
