A trip to the cinema! To begin the topic the children were treated to a private viewing of the first film directed and produced by the George Méliés, titled ‘Le voyage dans la Lune.’ The silent film was released in 1902 and was inspired by a wide variety of sources; it follows a group of astronomers who travel to the moon in a cannon-propelled capsule to explore the moon’s surface.

In preparation for the event, popcorn bags were made and money was exchanged before the viewing to ensure everyone had something to eat whilst enjoying the entertainment. There were gasps from the children as the film began…

“It is all in black and white”

“You need a rocket to travel to the moon”

“The moon does not look like that!”

“No-one is speaking!”

“Where are their space suits?”

The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and all agreed that the quality of film has definitely improved over time! After all, where we all would be without the delights of Frozen and Walt Disney’s input into the film industry?

The students will have the opportunity during this topic to create their own films, using a range of technology.
