Letter from the Director of Music and The Arts -14th April 2016

My focus this week is on Music.

This week has seen the CCAs start once again and I have been very pleased with the first rehearsals with our school ensembles as they prepare for the two events taking place this term - the Stage and Screen Evening and the Summer Fun Day.

  • Orchestra

The orchestra has grown once again and I have been very pleased to see some pianists arrive with a view to playing orchestral percussion, well done to those pupils! The orchestra has also seen the formation of its first brass section; thanks to the work of our brass teacher, Mr Liu, this group of instruments is starting to expand.

We are looking forward to the start of the rehearsals for Horrible Histories with Years 3-6 and a small pit band. This event, which will take place at the end of June, will involve all pupils in these year groups and early signs, with the scripts now written, are that it will be a fantastic event and one not to be missed.

In the classroom I have been very impressed with the Year 2 classes as they start learning the keyboard as part of our Juilliard collaboration. The work that we have been doing with them in the previous terms has really brought these pupils up to speed with the programme and they are now able to fully access all that our Juilliard collaboration is able to offer. In Year 4, students are doing some fabulous work using Garage Band and setting music to a video. I encourage you to look out for some pictures on Class Dojo of both of these year groups carrying out this work.

Lastly, I am pleased to announce that I have now obtained, after an extensive search, a very suitable and qualified percussion teacher. Percussion and drum tuition will now be available at the school. Should you wish to sign up your child for such lessons then please look at the downloadable form on the school website under the Music area in Performing Arts.
