Letter from the Head of Secondary - 14th April 2016

Although in many ways this has been an unusually quiet week in Secondary, there has been a lot happening for certain students. The IGCSE Spanish and German students successfully completed their oral exams on Monday, followed by the French and Mandarin students on Tuesday. Yesterday saw the first day of the IGCSE Art exam, which concludes today. A small number of students have been involved in all of these and have thus had a very busy week so far.

Our Year 10 and 12 Geography students are out of school from today until Saturday. They are studying rivers at Tianmushan – an essential fieldwork activity to support their assessments for the IGCSE and IB respectively. We hope they have a successful – and dry – trip!

Our awards assemblies have started with Year 7 on Tuesday and Year 8 today. It has been great for students to see their parents at these events, celebrating their successes, and it has also been great to see how proud the students are of their nominations and awards. More of these to come for the other year groups over the next couple of weeks.

This morning we held an event for Year 11 and 13 parents aimed at supporting their children through the forthcoming exams. Mr Pritchard did an excellent presentation on revision techniques, and parents left with a number of tools for improving their own memories! We also discussed ways to support our Year 11 and 13 students during what can be a very stressful time (for students and parents!) which we hope will lead to them being in the best possible mental and physical state to allow them to achieve their potential.

Next week sees the awards assembly for Years 9 and 12, as well as an event for Year 7 and 8 parents looking at the changes to assessment and reporting at KS3 for next year. We hope to see some of you at these events. Also next week our ACAMIS footballers leave for Beijing, and we wish them every success in this tournament. Meanwhile, teachers are in the final throes of writing final reports for Year 11 and 13. On reflection, perhaps things are not quite as quiet in Secondary as I suggested earlier!
