Global Solutions at BISSMUN

On a sunny Sunday morning, eleven Model United Nations Delegates headed to our sister school at BISS Puxi to compete in the inaugural BISSMUN conference which promises to be even bigger next year.  With delegates ranging from Year 7 to 13, this was a representative group and really showcased the talent on offer at NIAS Pudong.

The Model United Nations is essentially a debating squad but instead of debating mundane issues or merely practising their rhetorical skills, these students represent the countries of the world and defend their policies on security, the environment, human rights and other interesting global issues.  It is a fantastic platform for practising what we preach in terms of promoting a truly global outlook.

On Sunday various topics were debated including: Ethan Church, Marcel Natter and Giorgio Wu on handling the North Korean missile stockpile and cooperating internationally to contain violence in the Afghanistan war; Mathilde Venet, Ashley Fung and Camilla Knudsen on promoting gender equality in men and women in all member states and ensuring that quality education is delegated to all children in Central Africa; Gautam Nair and Kavyasree Venkat Subramanian on cooperating to reduce damage resulting from natural disasters; and Warren Gichana, Nian Yun Tan and Jeonghun Bae on addressing the issue of gun control in North America and promoting the rights of LGBT relationships. With a host of contentious and controversial topics, the forums were full of passionate debating and heated discussions. Thankfully, most of the resolutions were passed indicating the success of cooperation and diplomacy.

There were special awards to Ashley Fung as the Best Delegate in the Human Rights Council, Warren Gichana picked up most diplomatic speaker in The General Assembly while Marcel Natter won a special mention for his endeavours on the Security Council.

It was a very successful day for all our delegates and we warmly thank the team from BISS Puxi for organising such a great day; we look forward to our next day of debates.
