English

Next week in English, our learning will focus on the book Energy Island, by Allan Drummond. At a time when most countries are producing ever-increasing amounts of CO2, the story tells the tale of the citizens of the Danish Island of Samsø, who have accomplished something extraordinary--in just ten years they have reduced their carbon emissions by 140% and become almost completely energy independent. Using this text as a base, the children will develop their skills writing paragraphs and character descriptions using noun phrases. They will also consolidate their understanding of using inverted commas to punctuate speech and they will learn how to retrieve and record information from non-fiction texts in a concise way.

In guided reading, the children will develop their skills in using inference to deepen their understanding of a text.

Maths

In Maths next week, we will continue to work on multiplicative reasoning. We will revisit mental and written strategies for division, which the children will then apply to solving word problems. To end the week, the children will be challenged to solve mixed problem-solving questions involving multiplication and division.

Topic

In topic next week, we will continue learning about our ‘active planet’. The children will learn about how the earth is formed, as well as what a volcano island is and where they are in the world. Following on from this, they will explore earthquakes - learning about what causes an earthquake and how they can be measured.
