English

In English, we will be looking at different instructional pieces of writing with the focus on recipes. Students will be identifying the important parts of this type of writing. They will then be choosing a recipe to rewrite in their own words. This will involve composing and rehearsing their recipes orally. After writing down their scripts, students will perform their recipes aloud, ensuring that they are using the correct intonation and controlling their tone and volume so that their instructions are clear.

Maths

In Maths we will be continuing our work on measure, especially as it ties in really well with our topic of “What’s on the Menu?”  Initially we will be reviewing measurement using scales, as this will be an important skill for when we do our entry point of making pancakes. Students will be focusing on converting measures and also finding fractions of amounts. Towards the end of the week, we will be looking at recipe-related word problems using weight, measurement and fractions.

Topic

In topic, we will be starting our new unit titled “What’s on the Menu?”  Initially we will be doing a knowledge harvest to see what the children know about where food comes from. Some questions we will ask to stimulate their thinking will be: Who makes the food we eat? How were the ingredients grown? How many different people were responsible for the food that ends up on your plate? How much do we really know about how food is produced and prepared? Where has the food on your plate come from?

After this, we have an exciting Entry Point planned where students will be involved in creating a pancake restaurant. They will be involved in measuring and preparing the pancake mix, making the pancakes and then will be invited to a pancake restaurant where they will be able to choose toppings for their pancakes.

We will be reviewing the steps of scientific investigations and then start looking at the parts of the eye, how the eye works and the effects of reflections and shadows.
