Thursday 12th May – 7.00pm - Stage and Screen Concert

Wednesday 18th May – Year 5 Fun Soccer Day

English

In English this week, the children will be reflecting on the fantastic residential trip in Suzhou or on the project they completed at school. The children will be writing recounts. Using photographs from the residential; the children will decide on their favourite activities. To help with their writing, the children will read different types of recounts and they will then generate what the success criteria for a recount should be. We will investigate the effect of using 'point and elaborate' in paragraphs. The recount activity will provide the children with the opportunity to use modal verbs, cohesive devices and to vary the use of tense.

Maths

In Maths this week, the children will start off by using mental strategies to multiply and divide numbers. Formal written methods will also be reinforced. Next, using square and cubed numbers in problems will be a focus, as well as recognising these numbers by notation. Following on from this lesson, the children will scale fractions and rates using multiplication and division. This links well with the follow-up on improper fractions and mixed numbers which will take place on Thursday. To finalise the week, we will revisit percentage and decimal equivalents and challenge the children’s understanding through problem-solving activities.

Topic

On returning from our fantastic residential trip away, we will start our new topic the ‘The Holiday Show’. In this unit, as geographers, we will be considering what tourists are like around the world, the different types of holidays we can go on, and what kind of impact tourism can have on a country’s economy and environment. In our first week, we will be creating travel apps, rough guides or documentaries for a place we have visited before, as part of our entry point. We will then share everything we know about global travel as we hold our knowledge harvest. Finally, we will begin some geography-themed lessons on climate around the world, including an understanding of lines of longitude and latitude.
