Letter from the Head of Secondary - 2nd June 2016

Last Friday we gathered at the beautiful Fairmont Peace Hotel for the final farewell to our Year 13 students. This was a much more informal affair than the previous week’s graduation, but we still enjoyed a variety of speeches, as well as the excellent food and company. I’m not sure what time the event finished, but as I left about 11pm, many students, staff and parents were all still enjoying themselves on the dance floor!

It’s been another rather exam–focused week in Secondary, with Year 10 and 12 students sitting their end-of-year exams, in preparation for the mock exams at Christmas, and the final exams next May/June. Years 7, 8 and 9 have also been sitting their end-of-year assessments, which have involved, for many of them, their first experience of sitting formal exams in the hall. I’m pleased to say that, in general, they dealt with this experience remarkably well, and knowing how to cope with this situation will certainly benefit them as they move towards IGCSE and beyond.

The next two weeks will be all about exam feedback and learning what went well, what didn’t go so well, and what they need to do in order to improve further next time. Year 12 also have the Group 4 Project from Monday 6 to Wednesday 8 June, to which parents are invited on Wednesday afternoon, and we look forward to many Year 12 parents joining us for this.

On Tuesday, we welcome our Year 6 students into the Secondary school for a ‘taster day’.  They will experience a range of specialist lessons, as well as a special assembly, and will have the opportunity to talk to some Year 7 students who can tell them all about what to expect and how to transition smoothly into Secondary school life.

Before that, however, we have Saturday’s Summer Fun Day which, weather permitting, promises to deliver exactly what the event says – a day of summer fun!

I hope to see many of you there.

Head of Secondary
