Find out what's been happening In Year 7

Welcome to the start of the Year 7’s academic pathway in the Secondary School. It has been amazing to see just how well all our students have adapted into their new surroundings with ease and have quickly got themselves settled into following a timetable that is within different parts of the school. Year 7 have come to school looking super smart in their uniforms and have had excellent punctuality and attendance. Well done!

One thing that has made me very proud this week is the way our returning students have taken on the role of mother hen by welcoming our new students with open arms, showing them around the basics of the school and escorting them to different ends of the building when the time required it. May I take this opportunity to say a big, special thank you to Mia Dajani-Keenan, Amelie Zou and Mahaut Barral form 7B for being fantastic buddies, along with Karlijn Gabrielse and Juliette Le Godec from 7C. They of course have been helped out by the rest of their form and a special mention to Kaiyao Jiang 7B who has also helped to translate for some of the new starters too.

Last week saw the start of the first House challenge where all of the secondary school were pitted against each other in the House games, where obviously the best house Dao won on the day! There were some great leadership skills displayed here and everyone gave it their best shot. Well done Year 7.

Important Notices:

Year 7 students (with the exception of new students as they have already done these) will be undergoing their Cognitive Abilities Test (CATs) this coming week which focuses on:

  • Verbal Reasoning – thinking with words
  • Numerical Reasoning – thinking with numbers
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning – thinking with shapes
  • and lastly Spacial ability testing – thinking with shapes and spaces.

All of the tests will be supervised by class teachers. There is no need to revise for these tests; they just give our school some baseline data to aid with setting of students. Please find the timetable below for these sessions.

Through the Classroom Keyhole

Many thanks go to the student reporters from 7A who have given us an insight into their first two weeks in their secondary school.

Vaishnavi Ashok

My friends mean a lot to me; whenever I am stressed or sad about something, they always find a way to make me smile. They help me when I am worried or having a tough time. They are always there by my side.

Naina Jaswal

Today was the first day of school. What a day! It was fun. We met new people, had new clothes, new classmates, teachers, rooms ... So much! All of us had really great time. From my view, this school is the best.

Phoebe McLuskie & Lilian Yearwood

So far Year 7 is REALLY fun; we do a lot of interesting and new things. Our teachers have been thoughtful in helping us settle into our new classrooms. We are looking forward to having all the new lessons that we did not have in year 6. So far our favourite lessons have been: Drama, DT, Art and Science.

Lenard Chang

A few days ago two puppies were found on the secondary football field, Luca Jones and Ciro Verni found the puppies after lunch time beside the C block. Ciro said: "Someone must have left them there because whoever left them there must know that this is a school, so the students and teachers will take care of them”.

Jean Penguilhan

First day of school: When I got on the bus I was not sure which class I was in so I asked the bus monitor and she told me I was in 7A. When I got to the corridor there were two teachers; one was Mrs. Alderson and the other one looked at me and said "What class are you in?” I replied “7A”  then he said "Oh? Then you’re with me then". This was the first time I had met Mr. Thomas, my form tutor. We had a special assembly on the first day too.

In Science: Year 7 have been learning about health and safety in Science and you can see some photos of 7A learning how to use a Bunsen Burner. SEE PHOTOS

Next newsletter student reporters will be from 7B, namely Amelie Zou, Ben Van der Putten, Araya Richards, Kaiyao Jiang, Mia Dajani-Keenan and Elmer Yap. They will be focusing on subject specific areas.

And finally - well, all this wonderful news wouldn’t be possible without mentioning the fantastic form tutors we have in Year 7. Here are some special messages to their new forms.

Mr Thomas 7A

The transition from primary to secondary can be a daunting and difficult task for students and parents; I have been nothing but impressed with how well 7A have settled and dealt with this potentially turbulent time. So far no books or students have been lost, but most importantly a lot of learning and smiles have taken place. Well done 7A on a great start and I look forward to seeing you take full advantage of the outstanding education and opportunities we over here at NAIS Pudong.

Mr Howell 7B

It has been an absolute pleasure to be 7B’s form tutor; every single student seems to have settled well into the form and have played a positive role in tutor time. It has been great to see how well our new students have settled in and how they have been welcomed by the returning students. I have been super impressed with them taking on responsibility by recording housepoints and doing uniform & equipment checks on a daily basis. We had great fun last week playing a hide and seek game around the secondary school and I am confident that students know their way around the school now.

Miss Cuskin 7C

Wow, what an amazing start to the year- I have been so impressed with the enthusiasm and attitude to learning in 7C and the general positive manner in which they approach all tasks.  It was great to 7C exhibit their teamwork skills in the recent ‘Teamwork Thursday’ house event, each student worked exceptionally well; eager to gain points for their respective house points- fantastic work. I am looking forward to seeing them continue to work hard and do well throughout the year.
