A word from the Year Leader

Welcome to a new year. Welcome to all our new students and to those returning welcome back.

For the new students a long but exciting couple of weeks full of new faces and new challenges. For returning students, an exciting fortnight being reunited with old friends and making new ones. But for all a fantastic start packed with activities, learning opportunities, friendly faces and fun.

One thing that made me very proud was the way the current students welcomed our new 5 students with open arms and I hope that they have settled into our school life with the help of their ‘buddies’. We welcomed Dayoung, Alejandro and Airi into the year group. It was a little unusual for 2 of our new starters this year who are actually returning students! Caitlin and Nehmat attended our school, left Shanghai for some time with their families and then were happy to return to join NAIS once more. Thank you to the amazing buddies; Danny, Michaela, Yukiko, Jocelyn, Simon and Dahee who have been on hand to help them settle in.

Having met the students in Year 9 as a group this week I have to admit that I am a lucky Year Leader to be leading such an enthusiastic and ambitious group of young people. All student have thrown themselves head first into the opportunities that have been presented to them. We had a huge turnout of Year 9 students at the sports trials for swimming, football and U15 Fobisia but more about this later. Much more to come for these students over the course of the year!

A brilliant start and looking forward to the year ahead.

Teamwork Thursday

We kicked off this year’s house event with “Teamwork Thursday”. Students worked in their house teams to solve problems and prove that collaboration and teamwork produces results. It was a fantastic afternoon of fun and there was laughing and smiles from everyone! Big shout to Dao house who were the winners on this afternoon but its early days and the competition for House winners is wide open. Keep collecting those house points at every opportunity! Good luck to all the houses.

NAIS House Olympics.

Another opportunity for students to collect house points is through our newly launched NAIS House Olympics. As we watched the closing ceremony in Rio last week, we took the inspiration of the athletes who participated in the games and gave our students an opportunity to shine on both the track and the field. The students have been brushing up on their athletic skills before competing for medals (house point tokens); for every medal the students win they receive a number of house points. It looks like QI house are reigning supreme in terms of athletics in Year 9! Well done guys!

Meet & Greet

I look forward to seeing many of you at the Meet and Greet Evening planned for 13th September. This is a perfect opportunity to catch up with other parents as well as meet the teachers on a more informal level. We also plan to launch Project Week on this evening so important information regarding this year’s trip will be shared. Please contact me if you require any further information regarding the evening.

Book Amnesty

Please can you ensure if you have any text books at home that are no longer being used by students that they are returned to the relevant department. Your support with this would be much appreciated.

Homework Timetable

Students are set homework according to a timetable to ensure that they can stay organised with their time. It would be appreciated if you could support your children by checking that the homework set is completed by the due date and by signing the learning Journal. I have attached the homework timetable for each tutor group for your convenience.

Student Reporters

2 of our students have written about experiences over the first two weeks back at school.

Yukio Jauffret

On Saturday the school held the 2016-17 U15 FOBISIA trials. For those who are engaged in many sports this is one of the most exciting weeks of the year. For any new students FOBISIA is a sports competition between many other schools in south East Asia that usually occurs overboard, including of 4 main sports: Football, basketball, swimming and athletics. Only 12 girls and 12 boys under the age of 15 can be accepted. The trials are a very intense part of FOBISIA where you have to prove to your coaches that you will fit the team. On Saturday all students taking part in the trials tried out for as many sports as they could, everyone who gets in has to be good at least 3 of the sports. I tried out for all 4. Now all we are waiting for is for the results to come out! I really hope I can get in because I got in last year and it was so much fun, I even got to see some of my old friends form my previous school in Vietnam! Good luck to everyone who tried out. LET THE 2016 U15 FOBISIA GAMES BEGIN...

Isabella Van Der Putten

On Saturday 27th of August I went to a swim trial for the team. We started off by splitting children from year 7 to year 13 into different lanes. The first exercise was swimming laps using the paddle boards as a warm up. The second exercise was a challenge. They included turnaround times and long distance swimming. The coaches pushed us and made sure we tried our best. At the end of the day I was exhausted. I know that it was worth it because I got into the team and many other people did.

Just a reminder that there are still places available on our fantastic Iceland trip which will take place over the Chinese New Year holidays (25th January 2017-2nd February 2017).
