Information and Reminders

Our Exit Point is upcoming on Friday 3rd March; we’ll be exhibiting a wide variety of projects on which the Year 6 children have been working. This week, 6A we again the winners of our primary challenge, showing integrity and maturity as they lined up and moved around the buildings. They are a credit to their teacher, Mr. Finan, and role models to the rest of the Primary school. Well done.

English

In English, we will look at another type of formal writing, which is a discussion text. Students will analyse features of language in sample texts, then construct their own, linked to our Topic of evolution. Students will be expected to use formal conjunctions to construct their argument, and express alternative points of view. Guided reading will continue with our two texts ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ and ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’. Our SPAG topic will be sentences types (i.e. exclamation/ statement/ question/ command).

Maths

In maths, we revisit the area of fractions, decimals and percentages. Over the next two weeks, students will learn to add and subtract fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers, using the concept of equivalent fractions. We will also learn to multiply simple pairs of proper fractions, writing the answer in its simplest form [for example, 1/4 × 1/2 = 1/8] and divide proper fractions by whole numbers [for example, 1/3 ÷ 2 = 1/6].

Topic

We wil finish our Topic unit, ‘Out of Africa’, based on the theory of evolution and inheritance. Students will be learning about natural selection, DNA, the search for life on other planets, and the spread of disease. We will later start to look at the topic through the lens of technology as we produce models of the iconic ‘double helix’, the code of life itself.
