Information and reminders
The children will be studying the work of William Shakespeare. The Year 1 teachers have been busy preparing fun and exciting lessons for your children to enjoy. There was information and guidance shared earlier this week about Shakespeare week and costumes. If you have any questions please contact your child’s class teacher.
School photos – next week we will be having individual and class photos during the school day. Please can all children be dressed in the correct winter uniform for their photographs. For consistency, girls should wear either black tights or black socks for their photograph.

Drop Everything and Read – Students will need to bring a book to school every day next week, which they will take with them to every lesson. On hearing a bell or whistle, they must stop what they are doing and pick up the book and read.
Book Swap – If you have any unwanted books at home that you are willing to donate, you may bring them into school and your child can swap them for another book on Thursday or Friday of next week.
Book Fair – we will have external vendors in school from Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th March selling a range of books. Students will have an opportunity to make a wish list of books they like, which they can bring home to show you, before purchasing any.
As part of the current IPC topic, Year 1 will be visiting the Shanghai Municipal History Museum. The letter was emailed to all parents today.

Stars of the Week
Year 1A – Nicole Gu for displaying beautiful manners and putting lots of effort into her work
Year 1B – Ethan Yang for settling well into his new school
Year 1C – Kevin Xie for his excellent adding and multiplying with coins.
In English, we will be reading the famous Shakespeare play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ The children will be shown a child friendly version of the play.
Activities will include:
- Creating their own potions to turn their teachers into donkeys!
- Writing instructions
- Hot seating characters
- Retelling the story
- Writing character descriptions

In Mathematics, the children will continue their exploration of money. They will solve simple problems involving money and will record their work and explain their working out. The children will begin to use everyday language related to money.
Key vocabulary: money, denominations, value, coins, notes and amount
Next week, the learning goal we will be exploring will be ‘World citizens.’ The Beatles song that will be used as our stimulus will be ‘All you need is love,’ this is linked to our Shakespeare play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’
We will continue to look at the work of ‘Lichtenstein.’ The children will continue to work on their own self-portraits. They will use different materials to create their self-portraits and develop different techniques using colour, pattern and shape.
