Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

Information and Reminders

School photos – next week we will be having individual and class photos during the school day. Please can all children be dressed in the correct winter uniform for their photographs. For consistency, girls should wear black tights for their photograph.

We’ve had a successful week preparing for our Macbeth performance on Friday 24th. The students have really impressed us with their attitude to put on the best possible show. They’re currently memorising lines, which we hope they will be able to perform for our next rehearsal on Tuesday 21st. Students will be making props and sets in class, while the costumes can as simple or elaborate as the students wish to make them. Please do not feel any obligation to buy expensive costumes for this one-off performance. We will be inviting Years 5, 7 and 9 to watch the play, which will be staged all along the Year 6 corridor and classrooms. Parent viewers should be ready at the Maker Space at 10.40am for the first performance.

Shakespeare Week will also feature a few different activities, including ‘Where’s Will’, in which students will hunt to find a photo of William Shakespeare hidden on the Primary School corridors. We will also be doing ‘DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)’, in which everyone in school will stop and take out a book for five-to-ten minutes of private reading. Teachers who are caught without a book will be photographed for the ‘Wanted Wall’! We will also have a ‘book swap’, in which students can exchange an unwanted book (in good condition) for a different one. Friday is dress-up day, which for Year 6 will mean their Macbeth costumes. However, if students want to wear something else before/after the performance, that’s also fine.

Book Fair – we will have external vendors in school from Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th March selling a range of books. Students will have an opportunity to make a wish list of books they like, which they can bring home to show you, before purchasing any.

We’ve also moved further in our actions for the Global Campus Global Challenge. As a school we will create an action plan to address two UNICEF Global Goals For Sustainable Development:  Goal #2 – no hunger, and Goal #3 – good health and wellbeing. Each class will be taking part of the responsibility to make a plan and then make progress towards these goals. It’s something we know our students are keen to help, and they will surely have lots of ideas for action.

English

In English, we will practising our performances of Macbeth in preparation for Friday. We will also have some fun with the Witches’ potion recipe, and make our own rhyming couplets to brew our own potion. We will continue our links with Year 1 classes by reading with the younger children in the library. Our SPAG topic is subordinate clauses.

 

Maths

In maths, we will learn to approximate any number by rounding to a specified degree of accuracy; e.g. nearest 1, 10, 100, 1000, decimal place, etc. Students will also understand estimating as the process of finding a rough value of an answer or calculation, and use estimation to predict the order of magnitude of the solution to a decimal calculation.

 

Topic

We will continue our Topic unit, ‘Fairgrounds’, by looking at how physics is involved in carnival games and challenges. We aim to master the technical terms needed to describe the physical world, such as gravity, potential energy, kinetic energy, air resistance, buoyancy, centripetal force, and friction. Where possible we will make links to our maths curriculum, for instance in calculating the percentage chances of winning in our carnival games.
