English

In English, the children will be starting our new chapter book, ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again’, by award winning author Frank Cottrell Boyce. A ‘sequel’ to the classic movie, the book is a travel adventure story, and therefore will allow students to make connections between their ideas on responsible tourism made this week in English, as well as in their wider topic learning. After reading the opening and analysing how the author creates humour, we will imitate the genre by writing our own story starters using similar techniques. We will then be using drama and poetry to further explore the opening chapters.

Focus: Make characters inferences, understand the author’s use of language, imitate an author’s style and explore themes in a text.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we will be looking at Mathematical Movements, in particular, translations and reflections. We will be translating shapes on a grid, and will begin to look at translating shapes across the four quadrants. We will be describing the translating shapes in terms of up and across, and some students will begin to look at how translations can be written in vector form.

Key vocabulary: translation, reflection, congruent, axis

Topic

In topic, the children will be investigating and locating natural disasters that have happened in China. We will then explore a range of global natural disasters and the impact this has had on tourism. We will look at the following: Montserrat Volcanic eruption (1995), Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004), Hurricane Katrina (2005), Icelandic ash cloud - Eyjafjallajokull Volcano (2010), Japan Earthquake (2011) and the UK Somerset floods (2014). Towards the end of the week, we will have a debate about whether or not tourist companies should use places where natural disasters have happened as holiday destinations, and begin to understand how tourism can have positive effects on a country’s economy or the environment.
