Year 8 News - 14th April 2017

Find out what's been happening in Year 8

Message from the Year Leader

Welcome back from your Easter Breaks! Term 3 starts and its hard to believe we are already into the last term of the school year. A couple of important things from me. Firstly, Academic Review Evening will be held next Tuesday (18th April) and Thursday (20th April), for Key Stage 3. I hope to see as many of you there as possible, as this is a great opportunity to speak to your child’s teachers about his/her progress and to discuss their term 2 report.  Secondly, in a few weeks we will be launching the use of Class Dojo in the Secondary School. Class Dojo is already in use in Primary as well as Year 9 and has been used extremely successfully as means of communication. As parents, you will be able to keep up to date, daily, with things that have been happening in your child’s year group and class. More information to follow shortly.

School production – Into The Woods

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the students from Year 8 who put an enormous amount of time and effort into rehearsing and performing for Into the Wood before the Easter break. The performances were held over four days and the students were all outstanding in their portrayal of the characters  in the play. Well done to all and a special mention to Warren Gichana for his solo singing and acting performances – what a voice!

Lesson Updates

Temoso, 8A for PE

So this term we have been doing fitness but we have recently changed to rugby. Rugby has been really fun because we are looking at agility and speed which we are really good at now because we have just been doing cv fitness reaction and agility so we have had extra lessons to get ready for rugby. It has really been fun mostly because rugby is an intense sport and also involves lots of body contact.

Kana, 8A for French

In French for this week, we have studied about character's personality such as funny, curious, annoying etc. Our learning object was to able to make sentences about our own character and friend's character by ourselves. During lesson, we used STUDIO 2 and quizlet on ipad. STUDIO 2 is the name of textbook and we used it every time. In other words, it was really useful. There were two ways to use quizlet. One of the ways is just learn vocabulary by ourselves. The other way is to do small competition in the class on website. We can improve our speed and correct answer rate in the competition. For homework, we also used STUDIO 2 then we checked the answer in the lesson and we improved our pronunciation by using quizlet or thing which we got from teacher in email.

I really enjoyed whole lesson and I want to learn French even after I leave NAIS.

Daniella, 8A for Science

In Science class we have been learning about aerobic and anaerobic respiration in plants and animals. We looked at how plants need sunlight to photosynthesize. I am enjoying this topic as well as the rest of the class. Next term we will be studying reflections and mirrors. I look forward to the upcoming lessons.

Ciara, 8A for English

In English we have been learning gothic horror, within that topic we have studied the story tell-tale heart. We have come to an end of that topic now and we have just made videos representing the story but we could also do the Raven if we wanted. You could do still images, live action or draw pictures to represent the story. You could also do a serious or comedy video.

Aryan - Maths

In Maths we have been learning about the surface area of a prism and finding the volume of a shape. The equation for this is pie r^2 x height. To find the radius you half the diameter of a cylinder and the height is how long the shape is.
