After a year of hard work, the time has finally come: this is my last newsletter before the students begin their study leave! I continue to be very proud of the students’ work ethic and sensible attitude to their studies as the exams approach. I am receiving many positive reports from year 11 teachers on a daily basis about how well they are doing. Special mention this week goes to Sarah Thornton, who despite having a badly broken collarbone, has not only managed to make it into school almost every day but has displayed an incredibly positive and resilient attitude. Well done Sarah!
Sports Awards Ceremony
I was delighted on Monday evening to be able to attend the annual Sports Awards Ceremony for the Pudong Tigers in years 10-13. As the students are aware, I am not a sporty person myself, but I found it truly inspirational watching so many year 11 students being rewarded for their participation and achievement in sports including football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, netball and swimming. Congratulations to all those students who are members of our wonderful sports teams here at NAIS Pudong and special congratulations to Lovisa Lindquist, who received the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year Award- very well done, Lovisa!
Study and Revision: Good Habits
As I said in my previous newsletter, I would like to remind students that they need to keep focused and working in lessons right up until they go on study leave. Although they may feel that the time is approaching when they want to be revising independently, lesson activities and homework are all geared towards revision at this stage and students need to ensure that they are working to the best of their ability. Please encourage your child to make sensible choices at this time: they should be limiting screen time in the evenings, going to bed at a reasonable time, eating healthily and drinking lots of water. A student who is tired will not be able to learn effectively.
As you already know, the last day before the start of study leave has been confirmed as Thursday 4th May. Up until this point, students are expected to attend school every day as normal; from Friday 5th May onwards, students are only required to attend school if they have an exam, although they may come to school if they wish to study independently or if they have been invited in for revision sessions. Students wishing to come in on days when they do not have an exam need to sign in at main reception. They then have the option of going to the Media Suite, which will be a supervised study room throughout the study leave period, or to the library. Students should not expect to be able to attend their timetabled lessons unless a teacher has specifically invited them in for a revision session.
Arrangements for Thursday 4th May
On Thursday 4th May, the last day before study leave begins, the morning lessons will proceed as normal but in the afternoon the year 11s will not be in lessons; instead they will be in a special Celebration Assembly in lesson 5, and then will have a celebratory picnic in lesson 6. Please send your child in on Thursday with some food and/or drinks to share. Please also remind your child that rules of behaviour remain the same up until they go on study leave and that students who do not behave appropriately will not be allowed to attend the celebratory events.
Year 11 Prom at Kathleen’s Waitan
After months of hard work by the Prom Committee, I am excited to announce that the Prom will take place at Kathleen’s Waitan on Saturday 17th June. Kathleen’s Waitan is a wonderful location with a fantastic view of the Bund, and I remember with fondness the beautiful evening we spent there with last year’s cohort. You should by now have received an email invitation to the prom: the event is free for students to attend but each adult ticket is 420RMB. It would be fantastic if we could see all students with at least one parent at the prom. It is a lovely event to mark the end of their IGCSEs and their transition to IB, and a great opportunity for photos with your child in their formal wear!
