Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 develop their skills in public speaking

Information and Reminders

Preparations for the KS2 production continue this week with our CCA practice. By now we should have received from all families a reply slip which indicates how your child will travel home after the practice. If you have not informed the class teacher, please do so immediately.

This week we have allocated roles and on Tuesday we will start rehearsing the entrance, exits and movement around the stage. Further practice will take place in classrooms on an occasional basis, increasing in frequency as we near the performance dates.

We look forward to meeting parents on Wednesday to explain more details about the move from Year 6 into Year 7. We welcome questions or comments about the process following our presentation. There will also be chance to discuss SATs after the briefing. We hope to see you there.

Please note that IB exams have now begun and will be taken in the Primary building. The main staircase in B Block will remain closed and all students and adults should use alternative staircases. Please can we ask parents not to wait in the area outside the Hive, outside Sports Hall B or along the Year 3 classrooms, as we need to ensure silence for our older students. Parents are always welcome to go to Aspretto, our coffee shop, whilst waiting for students. Thank you for your support.

English

In English, some groups will begin a new book called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which is set around a concentration camp in World War 2. The story has been adapted into a movie. We realise that this may be a sensitive subject for some families. If you have any concerns about the content of these lessons, please contact us. We will also continue to prepare and perform mock trials, using age-appropriate real life scenarios such as minor traffic accidents, vandalism, and petty theft. Students will practice their ability to engage and persuade an audience through speech and delivery. Students will also practice their listening skills as jurors. Our SPAG topic is word families.

Maths

In maths, we will begin studying the presentation of data in bar charts, pie charts, Venn diagrams and pictograms. Students will learn to construct and interpret pie charts, and solve problems involving graphs and charts. One common misconception relates to the confusion over the fact that the sections of the pie chart total both 100% and 360°.

Topic

We will continue our unit, ‘What a Wonderful World’, which is a geography-themed programme of study. We’ll be finding out more about extreme weather events such as blizzards, hurricanes and drought. We will bring in some Art and Technology subject work as we represent our learning about the Earth in visual forms.
