Year 3 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 3

  • Our learning in Year 3

Information and Reminders

  • We are wearing our summer uniform. Please make sure your child wears the correct uniform to school, particularly the correct footwear. They must look smart. We will continue to monitor this closely.
  • Please make sure you also let the class teacher know if your child’s end of day arrangements have been changed so there is no confusion.
  • Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school.
  • Reading challenge – You need to sign and date your child’s learning journal 3 times in one week after you have heard them read then they will receive a Dojo point. If children are not reading regularly at home then they will attend lunchtime reading club on a Friday. We hope for your support!
  • Please note that IB and IGCSE exams are taking place and will be taken in the Primary building. The main staircase in B Block will remain closed and all students and adults should use alternative staircases. Please can we ask parents not to wait in the area outside the Hive, outside Sports Hall B or along the Year 3 classrooms, as we need to ensure silence for our older students. Parents are always welcome to go to Aspretto, our coffee shop, whilst waiting for students. Thank you for your support.
  • STEAM Day - The theme for the upcoming STEAM day (Thursday 18 May) will be recycling. Please bring in clean, safe recyclable materials (plastic, cardboard, paper) for construction on the day.

Star of the Week

3A – Charlotte for great leadership and creative ideas when making a house including a circuit.

3B – Alexandra for working hard on her non-fiction information page and for helping me find my way around Year 3!

3C – Sharly for trying really hard in English and improving her writing.

English

Next week we will link our English work to our topic unit. After witnessing an earthquake the children will write a diary entry about how they felt, what happened etc. They will then work with others to write a script for a news broadcast about the event and interview witnesses.

Maths

We will continue to focus on ‘Exploring Money’. We will learn to recognise the value of coins, add and subtract amounts of money when the units are the same and when the units are different. We will record a practical money problem using £ and/or p notation and solve practical problems that involve calculating change in manageable amounts.

Topic

We will be starting our new and final topic, Active Planet. To introduce the topic we will be making videos with special effects to witness an earthquake in school. The children will be researching different volcanoes and looking at the aftermath of these events. They will create a painting of a volcano and locate volcanoes around the world to display on our large world map.

Computing

We will continue our unit of ‘We are bug fixers’.  Children will explain how the scripts work, finding and correcting errors in them, and explore creative ways of improving them. The children will learn to recognise some common types of programming error, and practise solving problems through logical thinking.
