Staff Profile: Penny Mulholland

Mulholland Penny staff

Year 4 Teacher and Head of Learning Support

Having graduated in 1987 from Westminster College in Oxford, Penny began her teaching career in a large primary school in Leeds. This was followed by three years in Bradford before moving further north to the beautiful county of her birth, Cumbria. A post as Year 2 teacher was combined with the role of SEN co-ordinator in a village primary school.

After a brief sabbatical from teaching (helping her husband to run a small business selling books), Penny returned to education as a supply teacher, working in a variety of long and short term contracts which enabled her to gain valuable experience across primary and early secondary age ranges and in a number of disciplines , particularly Special Educational Needs. In 2008, a return to combining classroom teaching (this time in Year 4) with a whole school role in Learning Support in a small rural town with a high level of social deprivation. After three years in this post, the lure of International teaching beckoned and Penny spent five very happy years in Qatar in the Middle East, first in SEN and for the last four years as Head of House with responsibility for over 700 students aged 3-18 in the biggest school she has ever known (approximately 4500 children)!

Penny is passionate about Literacy and empowering children to fulfil their potential in all spheres of life and when the role of Whole School Learning Support Leader was advertised in NAIS Pudong, she knew that the time had come to take on a new challenge in a new country.

Penny has two grown up daughters, Alice and Jenny (Jenny has recently flown the nest having been lucky enough to experience life as an international student). She and her husband, John, are keen tennis players and they have managed to keep playing outdoors even in the punishing desert heat! An avid reader, she also enjoys yoga (acknowledging that she will never be an expert!), travel and swimming. Being able to use public transport again is definitely something Penny will relish.
