Last year the Global Campus focus was on zero hunger and good health and well-being. This year we will be focusing on the goals for making our cities better places to live and to reduce waste by only using what we need.
As part of our commitment to the global goals we will continue to support the Huaxin Rehabilitation and Education Centre for Disabled Children. BISS Puxi has been a consistent supporter of the Huaxin Centre over the last few years and we will continue to strive to make the children’s and their family’s lives better.
HUAXIN CENTRE PROFILE
The Shanghai Huaxin Rehabilitation and Education Centre for Disabled Children is a non-governmental organization helping children with infantile autism, cerebral palsy and other motor disorders. It was founded in 2004 and is located in nearby Huaxin Town, about 15 minutes from BISS Puxi.
More than 80% of the Huaxin patients are from migrant families, mostly from very poor family backgrounds. The majority of them are of school or pre-school age. Their disability prevents them from being able to join a regular school, and without registered permanent Shanghai residence, they find themselves unable to attend any of the government-run special needs schools. In order to provide the Huaxin children with a learning environment, one of the Huaxin volunteers with a background in education, Diana Johnston from the U.K., joined in 2014 and set up the “Huaxin Special Needs School program”. Ever since then, the Huaxin children have had a place to learn and share their learning alongside undergoing therapy.
How we will support the centre
On Friday October 13 we will continue the fantastic work our students started last year by holding our first Huaxin Sensory workshop of the academic year. Approximately 15 of our Key Stage 3 children will design and create 5 different sensory stations for the Huaxin children and their families.
This will be the first of many sensory workshops, which BISS children will run over the course of the year. Later in the year we will also upgrade the centre’s facilities by creating them a musical playground out of recycled materials, and upgrade the Huaxin Early Years classrooms by donating our old furniture to them.
