Tet is a time for giving

Dear Parents,

Tet is fast approaching and our BIS Vietnamese Department is busy preparing for our annual Tet assembly. On Tuesday, we will have a special whole school Tet celebration which all parents are invited to. Both parents and children are welcome to dress in Ao Dais or Hanboks for the assembly which will take place at 8:50am.

Tet is a time for giving, with this in mind I would like to congratulate Quynh Anh in class 6B who has designed Tet envelopes which have been on sale in the school foyer today. All donations will go to the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation which are in need of toiletries for a new shelter due to open soon. Today’s sale was so successful that she sold out of envelopes. More will be available for sale on Monday.

I must also say thank you to all those who have brought in shoeboxes to donate to children in the SOS Village and Rice Scholarship. The Student Council and Ms. Tong will be feeding back on delivery of gifts soon – I’m sure your donations will make a big difference to those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Since the beginning of this academic year, there has been a focus on improving the accuracy and clarity of children’s spoken English. Many activities in the classroom have provided opportunities for children to join in group or whole class speaking tasks, an example of this is our Talk for Writing initiative. A formal programme which involves students delivering individual presentations with constructive feedback has been implemented in Phase 3 with a great deal of success. In addition, children have risen to the challenge of speaking for different audiences and for different purposes such as the Phase 2 Exhibition held before Christmas. Class assemblies have provided a different audience for students. Projecting voices, adding expression and speaking with confidence are all skills which are valuable.

Today, Class 6I provided a super example of what is possible. The class wrote all their own scripts following research on the human digestive system. The imaginative way they presented their information in assembly made for gripping viewing. Eating a pizza will never be the same again! Well done, Year 6 – I could hear every word and thoroughly enjoyed your presentation.

I am looking forward to watching Year 4 children next week as they are performing Shakespeare plays in the Drama Room. Parents are invited from 1:30pm on Monday.
