Language Celebration Week

Language plays an integral role in our education model here at BVIS. Therefore it was not a difficult task to come up with activities to run during our ‘Language Celebration Week’!

This year we have invited our students to take part in a timetable of activities at break time to challenge their oracy skills in English and Vietnamese. There has also been a bilingual idiom competition where students have had to complete an idiom “treasure hunt” around school and find out the definition of popular idioms used in Vietnamese and English.

However, the highlight of the week has been our first translanguaging and interpreting competition in Secondary. This started with an online quiz during form time which all students in Year 7 to 10 participated in. The winner from each form qualified to compete in the semi-final on Friday during our assembly, where they had to compete in another quiz. The top three winners Cong Hoang Year 10, Gia Phuong Year 9 and Minh Chi Year 9 finally competed in a live interpreting competition judged by 3 bilingual members of staff. The overall winner was Cong Hoang Year 10.

Language Celebration Week has provided an opportunity for students and teachers to reflect on the important role that language plays in our bilingual and bicultural curriculum in the Secondary section.   We hope the students have enjoyed the activities this week!
