SCHOLARSHIPS for students aged 16+

This booklet contains the details for all the awards offered by The British Vietnamese International School for those entering the school into Year 12 (first year of International A Levels). These details may change at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee, made up of senior leadership within the school; please consult our website for revised information.

For the new academic year 2017, scholarships are available in the following categories:

  • Academic Excellence Scholarships
  • Artistic Talent Scholarships
  • Extraordinary Achievement Awards

Scholarships will provide discretionary reduction in school fees from 10% up to 50% of school fees. An award will normally be held for the full duration of a student’s time at The British Vietnamese International School (for 2 years in Years 12 and 13), provided that academic performance and conduct remain of a suitably high level in the view of the Scholarship Committee and in accordance with the School’s Terms and Conditions and internal policies. A clear process of scholar support and monitoring is administered by the Assistant/Deputy Head of Secondary, details of which will be sent to parents upon the awarding of a scholarship.

Scholarships will only be awarded if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves.

All awards offered are subject to the recipient satisfying the School’s 16+ academic entry and scholarship requirements.

  • HOW TO APPLY

Students who wish to apply for a BVIS Scholarship for 2017-2019 are requested to submit the following documents by Friday 2nd June 2017.

    • Why he/she is applying for a scholarship at BVIS HN and why he/she thinks he/she should be chosen
    • A description of his/her strengths
    • What he/she can contribute to the school
    • How he/she demonstrated attributes of the A level Learner Profile

    2. Written references from two people, a reference from the candidate’s current Headteacher and the another from whom have worked with the student and can attest to his/her ability in the following areas:

    • Academic ability within the school curriculum
    • Involvement in other aspects of school life
    • The student’s independence, responsibility, perseverance and approach to learning and any other characteristics of the student that define them as a model student

    3. Details of two referees who may be contacted for information about the student’s suitability for a scholarship. These may be the same people outlined above.

    4. A letter from the student’s parents outlining how they can support the student should they be successful in gaining a scholarship to attend BVIS HN.

    5. If the candidate has undertaken IGCSE examinations, candidates are expected to have achieved A or A* at IGCSE in the subjects selected to be studied for the International A Levels programme (or in subjects requiring equivalent skills). For Maths, English (1st or 2nd language papers) and Science, we expect successful candidates to achieve an A* at IGCSE.

    6. Any other documentation that may support the student’s application.

Application Date:            by Friday 2nd June, 2017

Assessment Date:            Saturday 17th June, 2017

    THE BVIS Learner Profile

Our School Aide Memoire outlines 6 key elements that makes up a good student.

We wish our students to be distinguished by, and for, the following intellectual qualities:

    Integrity

an honesty in acknowledging the contributions of others, a maturing impetus to set goals and to realise one’s potential, a self-assurance to show intellectual ability without arrogance

    Respect

a desire to embrace extra opportunities to broaden horizons

    Care

    for oneself, others, one’s environment

    Enquiry

taking a positive academic lead at all times, a real thirst to explore ideas and knowledge, a passion for learning that is self-motivated

    Reflection

an ability to think ‘outside the box’

    Resilience

meeting the expectations to do one’s best and to achieve excellence, even when the going is tough, a willingness to persevere with difficult concepts and tasks.

The assessment and interview processes at BVIS are devised so that candidates for Scholarships are able to show the qualities that are listed in this profile. All candidates will be interviewed and be required to make a presentation to members of the Scholarship Committee. Candidates may also sit for academic testing requirements for the candidate’s chosen International A Level subject areas (if necessary). We are looking for genuine intellectual flair and academic strength, together with sensitivity towards other people.

An academic scholar will be expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the school and to perform at an academic level that is commensurate with ability. International A Levels options should reflect high academic aspirations.

The number of academic scholarships available each year will depend on the number of applicants and the quality of academic scholarship displayed from those who present themselves during the assessment process. Academic awards offered are subject to the recipient satisfying the School’s 16+ rigorous academic entry requirements.

Candidates for admission to Year 12 in late August 2017 are requested to register and submit completed application forms in accordance with the dates cited above and be willing to attend assessment on the specified date.

If appropriate within their previous school, candidates who have taken IGCSE examinations and achieve only A* and A grades (from results issued in August of the year of application) may be eligible for a Scholarship awarded for excellence in international examinations, depending on the number and quality of applicants for these awards.
