After qualifying as a Secondary Music teacher, Emily worked in an academy in Southampton for 3 and a half years. Her main role was teaching KS3 Music, BTEC Music, Dance and fitness. Through her role, Emily started up projects at special needs schools and local primary schools. Emily believes that working in this way benefits both the school and the community.
Emily moved to Tanzania at the end of 2014 to develop the music curriculum in primary schools and increase the popularity and standard of music as an extra-curricular subject. Her passion for choirs and ensembles is one of the ways she encourages students to engage and enjoy music of all genres. She is passionate about teaching world music and enabling students to delve deeper into their own culture and music tradition.
Emily herself is a vocalist and flautist and when not teaching performs in several bands. She enjoys collaborating with musicians of different cultures and languages. If she’s not behind a microphone then she’ll be engaged in a water sports activity. If it’s too cold to swim then she’ll be hidden somewhere with a science-fiction novel.
Emily believes that music and movement are two fundamental educational tools. They can be used to improve a student’s ability to focus on subjects across the school curriculum and build confidence. She is very much looking forward to learning about Vietnamese culture and working with her colleagues to develop the music curriculum within the school.
