Exploring the World of Fantasy Literature with Writer Phan Hon Nhien.

On Wednesday 12th October, Year 8 and 9 students at BVIS had a wonderful opportunity to meet Ms Phan Hon Nhien, a Writer and Editor of Kim Dong Publishers, in order to study the fantasy genre through its history, from “Alice in the Wonderland,”., to “Lord of the Rings” or the famous Harry Potter series.

Our students also learned more about the approach to this kind of literature in Vietnam, with some works of the fantasy genre such as Cold Eyes (Những đôi mắt lạnh), C World (Thế giới C), and Lang Biang Story (Chuyện xứ Lang Biang). More importantly, the lively interactive questions of the students inspired the writer to share her techniques and how to build up the setting, the plot, and characters, creating a bridge between reality and fantasy, and to help them write a fantasy story which is convincing to readers.

The most interesting part was when the session was divided into two forums including a Quiz Game led by MC Tung and a writing contest in which six groups of “famous green writers” from Year 8 and Year 9 worked together to create the plot of a fantasy story.

The meeting came to an end with the cheers of students when each group presented their pieces of work. Phan Hon Nhien commented on our students’ ability to develop a well-organised outline for a plot, as well as their creativity. She felt that with the students’ continuous perseverance, their manuscripts could be finished and then sent to a publisher. She will be the one who approves these manuscripts so some of them may be selected and published in the future. An exciting and interesting prediction!
