EAL Resources

Dear Parents,

Below is a selection of helpful resources for different age groups, that will help you to support your child with studying and improving their English. Your engagement with these resources at home will significantly help your child with their English and solidify the knowledge and skills they acquire at school, so any hour you can find to support your children will be a great help to them.

EYFS

Please download our Song Books and sing them with your child:

Key Stage 1 [Years 1 and 2]

The first is Oxford Owls ebook Library – the library has over 250 great books that you can read together or independently on a tablet or computer – all books are part of the famous Oxford Reading Tree. The library allows you to select an age appropriate book and a great additional feature is that all books have English audio, so that they can check their English as they read or just listen along. Each book has ‘Play Activities’ which tests your child’s understanding. You can find the library at: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/reading-owl/library-page

Simply go to the ‘my class login’ button at the top of the page. Class name: bvis Class password: bvis

Collins Big Cat Story Apps (iOS)

Collins have created 8 award winning, interactive books that are available free to download on iOS (apple iPads or other devices). These books are special as they allow your child to change the book and illustrations and they can also record their own voice telling the story. There are also hidden surprises on each pages and quizzes at the end.

Key Stage 2 [Years 3, 4, 5 and 6]

Reading Eggs – Y3-5

Reading Eggs http://readingeggs.com/, is an online platform that gives your child access to over 2000 online English books and a huge range of leveled comprehension lessons, activities and games. The programme is very interactive and encourages your child to read by giving them eggs for each activity or book quiz they complete. They can then use these eggs to buy items for their online reading eggs character – a feature the children love.

Your child should have a login and password in their diaries to access their subscription at home.

Spelling City Y3-6

The second is Vocabulary and Spelling City https://www.spellingcity.com/, which is useful for helping your child learn new vocabulary in a fun and interactive way. English teachers will be setting these activities as part of their homework.

Your child should have a login and password in their diaries to access their subscription at home.

Accelerated Reader Y6-7

We are pleased to inform you that this year we are introducing a new reading scheme into Year 6 called Accelerated Reader. This program allows children to take quizzes on each book that they have read, which tests their comprehension and vocabulary understanding. Not only does this allow the children to track their own progress, but it allows the teachers to monitor the books each child is reading to make sure they are all being challenged at an appropriate level in their reading. The program will continue on into Year 7.
