Claire Ricketts

Claire Ricketts

Year 2 Teacher

My name is Claire Ricketts and I am 28 years old. I live in a small town on the south coast of England called Bournemouth. Living here allows me to undertake some of my favourite past times including walking my dog down the beach, paddling in the sea (which is very cold most of the time) and sitting and watching the sunset. I also enjoy spending time with my family, especially my two younger cousins, doing baking and lots of different art and craft activities. In my spare time I like to go to the gym and go swimming. I love travelling and visiting countries where I can explore their cultures. I really enjoyed travelling around Scandinavia seeing Reindeers in the snow and visiting the Olympic stadium in Helsinki. I am really looking forward to moving to Qatar and becoming part of the NAISAK family.

I have been working in education for nearly 6 years. In 2011, I graduated from Rolle College, University of Plymouth, which is one of the oldest teaching colleges in the United Kingdom. I completed a 4 year BEd degree in Primary Education with a Physical Education specialism. During my time at University I completed 5 teaching placements at various schools in the South West. I was lucky enough to undertake a 6 week International placement in Lapland, Finland, working closely with children who had English as an additional language. This placement gave me an insight into how bilingual children learn and inspired me to continue developing my skills in this area. I have worked in small country schools with only 56 children to large international schools with over 700 children.

I have previously taught in the United Arab Emirates, Dubai, for 18 months, in a Year 4 class and then a Year 2 class. I worked with children from all over the world including a large number of local Emirati children. This was a wonderful learning experience and gave me an insight into the way an International school is run, the culture and customs of a Muslim country and most importantly how children from different backgrounds interact and the process they go through to learn a new language. I feel now is the right time for me to further develop and share the skills I have spent the last two years developing and I am looking forward to enhancing them further with my new class in Qatar.

For me, family is extremely important. My family is extremely large and spreads across the globe. We are all very supportive of each other, celebrating the good times and being there for each other through the bad times. Being from such a large family has helped me to develop into the person I want to be and bring something I can be proud of to share with them all. My Grandmother was a teacher and she has been my inspiration to follow my dreams and be the best I can be. Having the support of my family, knowing they are there for me no matter what, has enabled me to pursue my dreams and travel the world through a profession I love. My aspiration is to become more involved in Special Educational Needs including EAL and Gifted and Talented.
