Design Technology & Art Teacher

  • Period: Full-time
  • Contract: 2-Year

Both Art and Design Technology are popular and well-established subjects at St. Andrews and we are looking for an experienced and inspiring teacher to join the Creative and Performing Arts team. Class sizes are small and the students are motivated and enthusiastic, enjoying a lively approach to the subject through a wide range of teaching and learning techniques. The ideal candidate will convey enthusiasm for the subject and contribute collaboratively in the continued development of the curriculum from Year 7 to Year 13.

All students study both Art and Design Technology as part of a carousel in Key Stage 3, with groups of students having two 70-minute lessons per week for five weeks before spending five weeks in Drama and ICT/Computing. This allows much greater continuity for both students and teachers, as well as collaborative curriculum development. The Art and Design Technology curriculums are based on the English National Curriculum, but adapted to reflect both our location in South East Asia and the international nature of our students. Both Art and Design Technology are also popular subjects at both IGCSE and IB, and previous experience teaching one or both of these courses to students in Key Stage 4 and 5 would be a significant advantage.

Art and Design Technology are taught in two new purpose built classrooms, with the Art classrooms linked to allow collaborative teaching, with a large covered courtyard outside where students can both work and display their work. Students’ art work is displayed on walls and noticeboards and in offices all around the school. Our work in DT focuses on Resistant Materials, with significant recent investment in CAD/CAM and 3D printers and all lessons taking place in two large new purpose-built workshops.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school, and have an excellent reputation for supporting children with special educational needs. Experience of teaching children with dyslexia, mild autism, ADHD etc. would be very good prior experience for a teacher wishing to join our team. Our Mission Statement commits us to meeting ‘all the needs of the individual learner’, and this applies equally to those students targeting the very highest grades at IGCSE and IB. Our work on Assessment for Learning, Growth Mindsets and, more recently, High Performance Learning is a very important part of this.

Our school is committed to developing a Virtual Learning Environment using Moodle. There is a strong commitment to integrating the teaching and use of ICT skills into all areas of the curriculum, where appropriate.

As well as their teaching, all teachers are expected to contribute positively to both the school’s pastoral systems and the extra-curricular programme, offering an Extra-Curricular Activity that either supports or extends the students’ learning in their subject area, or from another area of personal interest.
