Mathematics Teacher

  • Period: Full-time
  • Contract: 2-Year

Mathematics is a popular and well-established subject at St. Andrews and we are looking for an experienced and inspiring teacher join the team. Class sizes are small and the students are motivated and enthusiastic, enjoying a lively approach to the subject through a wide range of teaching and learning techniques. The ideal candidate will convey enthusiasm for the subject and contribute collaboratively in the continued development of the curriculum from Year 7 to Year 13.

Mathematics is studied by all students in the High School and follows schemes of work based on the English National Curriculum but adapted to encourage real life applications and creative approaches, inspiring students to study outside of the curriculum. A Key Stage 3 curriculum, introduced last year, means that these Year Groups are now taught in mixed-ability groups, rotating between different teachers teaching topic based units.

At Key Stage 4, Years 10 and 11 students study IGCSE Mathematics. A small group of students who demonstrate a natural flair for Mathematics take the IGCSE exam at the end of Year 10 and then follow a Further Maths course in Year 11. All students study Mathematics as part of their International Baccalaureate Diploma. The Mathematics Faculty offers both Higher Mathematics and the two Standard Level courses, Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Studies. Experience of teaching the IB Mathematics courses, and their philosophy, especially at Higher Level, and/or of teaching Further Maths A-Level would be advantageous.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school, and has an excellent reputation for supporting children with special educational needs. Experience of teaching children with dyslexia, mild autism, ADHD etc. would be very good prior experience for a teacher wishing to join our team. Our Mission Statement commits us to meeting ‘all the needs of the individual learner’, and this applies equally to those students targeting the very highest grades at IGCSE and IB. Our work on Assessment for Learning, Growth Mindsets and, more recently, High Performance Learning is a very important part of this.

Our school is committed to developing a Virtual Learning Environment using Moodle. There is a strong commitment to integrating the teaching and use of ICT skills into all areas of the curriculum, where appropriate. All Maths classrooms have data projectors and interactive whiteboards and access to the Internet, with a laptop cart, iPads and ICT labs bookable when required.

As well as their teaching, all teachers are also expected to contribute positively to both the school’s pastoral systems and the extra-curricular programme, offering an Extra-Curricular Activity that either supports or extends the students’ learning in their subject area, or from another area of personal interest.
