Portable Magic - The BSB Festival of Books and Big Ideas

Visiting authors will visit our secondary school to present workshops to our KS3 students and we will also be doing "Drop everything and read" throughout the two weeks.

On the 10th March the secondary school will launch ‘The BSB Festival of Books and Big Ideas’. The festival is to be a celebration of reading and innovative thought.

Throughout the two week period, a number of events will be taking place both within school and outside of school.

As well as teachers from all subject areas building aspects of Literature into their Key Stage 3 curriculum, the school will host workshops with writers and artists from different fields.

On the 10th March, historian Paul Ham will be visiting the school to work with our History students. Paul Ham is a former Sunday Times correspondent and Walkley Award shortlisted author of History books. Paul Ham has written books on a range of historical topics such as The First World War, Hiroshima and The Vietnam War.

Award winning author, Gabrielle Wang will attend the school on the 12th March. Gabrielle is a Melbourne born author and illustrator of Chinese heritage. While at the school, she will be working with some of our Key Stage 3 art students. Gabrielle’s workshop will include an illustration session on mythical creatures and magic.

Finally, on the 17th March, Liz Lochhead will visit the school. Liz Lochhead has been a major figure on the poetry scene in Scotland for over 25 years. In 2011, she was appointed the Scots ‘Makar’ or National Poet of Scotland. Liz will give a presentation to our Key Stage 3 students and then host a poetry workshop.

Students from different year groups will also have the opportunity to attend talks and events at the Bookworm Literary Festival in Sanlitun. From talks on Feminism, Politics and Urbanisation to Science-Fiction, Slam Poetry and Graphic Novels, we hope that there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

‘The BSB Festival of Books and Big Ideas’ will take place from the 10th March – 21st March.  Students at BSB will take part in a wide range of activities and learning experiences that we hope will be enjoyable but also educational and thought provoking.
