Classroom News & Photos Year 5

Year 5 have been looking at Victorians and the life of the poor people. We have focussed on the children and the quality of their lives. The book Street Child by Berlie Doherty has been used as the stimulus for our work. The story is about a street boy called Jim Jarvis who experiences real hardship in the workhouse and working for Grimy Nick on a lighter coal ship. He is an orphan who was really down on his luck and had a hard existence. The story tells us about Doctor Barnardo and how he eventually took street children and gave them somewhere to live. The children have really enjoyed the book which is now reaching its conclusion.  (see Photo 1 above)

Alongside this the children have also studied Pre Raphaelite paintings and the work of a range of artist. The children have painted their own Pre Raphaelite style pictures. (see Photo 2 above)

Another artist studied was William Morris who particularly designed tiles and wall papers some if which are still used today. (see Photo 3 above)

Update from: Mr. Tony Witte, Year 5 Teacher.
